Chase Bank Savings Account

Chase Bank offers two different types of savings accounts, a regular account and a plus account. The regular account requires both a $25 minimum opening deposit as well as a $300 minimum daily balance to avoid paying a $5 monthly service fee. The minimum balance fee is much lower than the national average for the banking industry ($500), and there are some useful features associated with the account such as overdraft protection when linked to a checking account and an automatic savings program. However, the major downside to the account comes in regards to the interest rate that is offered, which is currently 0.01% (July 2011). This is one of the lowest interest rates one will find in the United States, and the plus savings account is not much better. Chase Plus Savings Account has a $100 minimum opening deposit and a $15,000 minimum daily balance to avoid their $20 monthly service fee. One would imagine that they would be getting a much higher interest rate than a regular savings account, but that is not the case at Chase Bank. A plus savings account starts at 0.15% and goes as high as 0.30% if one has at least $5,000,000 deposited. If this were a regular savings account it would still be considered extremely low, but the fact that it is a plus account is even more deplorable. One could certainly find much higher interest rates elsewhere for either type of account.
