Of course, American Express is most well known for it’s credit card offers and services, however, American Express realized that online banking is a great service for them to provide their customers. Also, offering online banking will help American Express attract new credit card customers by offering competitive cd rates and savings rates. On AmericanExpress.com they have a quick and customer friendly comparison chart that helps you compare and find the best bank account for you. In short, their certificates of deposit has a fixed apy rate, meaning, whatever the rate is when you deposit your money, will be the rate for the entire length of your cd account term. There is a penalty for early withdrawal, as with all cd accounts. The American Express savings account is actually the best rate in comparison to national savings accounts. However, this rate is flexible, meaning it can change and will change with the market rates. It was interesting that on the home page of American Express, they did not have a link to their banking accounts. They did have a link to their credit cards from their banking accounts. You get the feeling that the banking account section isn’t important enough to put on their home page but their credit cards are important enough to put all through out the site. However, they do advertise aggressively through online ads trying to attract new banking customers, but we can see that their biggest industry is of course credit cards.
